Saturday at the Huntington Beach Stake Center. Breakfast is provided until 8:55AM. Registration continues for late comers. Don’t forget your confirmation email.

9:00am – 12 Noon: Morning Work Shops & Service
Start your Saturday off right with two back-to-back workshops and service that will inspire, challenge, encourage, and uplift you.

Workshop A “Understanding Venus & Mars.. on Workshop Earth” 9:00-9:40, 9:50-10:30
Doctrine & Covenants 88:40 articulates that “Intelligence cleaveth unto intelligence;…virtue loveth virtue;…light cleaveth unto light.” They say men are from Mars and women are from Venus, but since we all live on Earth, this workshop is your chance to learn tips and tricks for attracting “like for like” as we navigate those gender-crossing differences.

Workshop B 9:00-9:40, 9:50-10:30
“Fulfilling Your Life’s Potential”
Come, see and live your potential. Join a professional life coach as he shares proven techniques for setting and achieving goals, overcoming self doubt and other obstacles, and learning to find fulfillment and joy in day to day victories.

Workshop C 9:00-9:40, 9:50-10:30
“Becoming the light of Life”
John 8:16, Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world, he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life”

Workshop Keynote: “Living Today for Today, and Tomorrow” 10:40-11:40 in the Chapel
In the coming days ahead, a casual commitment to Jesus Christ will not carry us through. ‘Come and See’ how the decisions we make today with a hope in and a commitment to Jesus Christ will determine our tomorrows.

12:00 pm Lunch – Taco Carts. Enjoy all you can eat authentic Mexican street tacos
Eat lunch, socialize then head to the beach where we’ll be spending the rest of the afternoon.

1:00pm – 4:30 pm Beach Activities [ Map ]
Beach Activities will be held at Beach Blvd and PCH in Huntington Beach. Parking costs at city and state beaches are $15, so it is recommended that you carpool.

COMPLIMENTARY ACTIVITIES: Volleyball, Frisbee, tug of war, limbo contest, sand castle building, flag football, 1-minute relay-races and music. Please spread out on the beach at the various appointed life-guard stations and try different activities to meet new people. This is the point, right?

SURFING: If you want to learn to surf, send an e-mail to saltwatersamc@gmail.com. There will be a fee for board and wetsuit rental. Sam needs to know in advance how many surfers to expect so that he can have enough boards, wetsuits, and instructors. He will also need the height and weight of the surfers so he knows what sizes in wetsuits and boards he will need to provide. You must know how to swim to sign up for surf lessons. There will be two sessions for surf lessons. The first is 1:30pm to 3:00pm and the second is 3:30pm to 5:00pm. We can only accommodate 20 surfers per session so it’s first come first serve. You must sign up for surf lessons in advance, prior to the first day of the conference. The surf instruction location will be announced at registration but is typically north of the Huntington Beach Pier.

VOLLEYBALL: If you want to play volleyball, you’re in luck. This year we’ll have 6 courts available and will be arranging teams at the site based on desired level of play and balance of men/women. For those who are “serious about their VB”, we’ll have a “pro” court with referee (we’re gonna call those net touches!) and for those who desire a slightly more “relaxed” game, we’ll have the other courts. Any questions, email affecteffect20@yahoo.com

Additional cost: Surfboard, boogie board, bike and in-line skate rentals are available for rent at various beach concessions.

Saturday evening at the Great Park in Irvine! [Map]

7:00 – 11:59 PM
Carnival Event – The Great Park in Irvine (www.ocgp.org/)
The Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California, is the first great metropolitan park of the 21st Century, built upon the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. Here you can enjoy a night filled with excitement, entertainment, and new heights as you enjoy: The great hot air balloon, carnival themed rides, and smaller group activities & games. And what would a night at the great park be without all the carnival festivities: churros, popcorn, & cotton candy until 12:00am!

7:00 – Start out your evening by experiencing the “Taste of Orange County” and enjoy the famous gourmet food trucks the OC has to offer.

The food trucks will arrive and serve from 7:00-9:00 pm

Iron Chef Event “The Hunger Games”: starts at 8:00-9:30 pm

Participate in an Iron Chef event where you will team up and face off as you demonstrate your culinary skills! Great way to munch and mingle and meet new people.

3:30pm- Lunch – Mingle and enjoy boxed lunches from the Honey Baked Ham. Meet outside after a morning of new perspective and reflection. Get some digits and make some new friends.

5:00pm Fireside- We have a very COOL and special evening planned for the fireside. You do not want to check out early and miss the closing event for our 3-day weekend. If you need to go, we understand. We will just wait to talk about you after you’re gone.

Conference Answers

How much is registration?
Registration will be in three phases this year:

$95 from March 5 – April 20, 2012

$110 from April 21 – May 10, 2012

$120 from May 11 – May 17, 2012

What does my registration fee cover?
Your registration fee covers the cost of all activities and meals as outlined in the conference schedule. Activities with additional cost and rentals for beach activities are noted on the schedule and on the registration form.

Can I participate in activities a la carte without attending the entire conference?
Yes, you can – however, the cost per activity will be significantly higher than the value of the overall conference.

Can I register at the door?
This year the online registration form contains questions that will help facilitate smaller group interactions. We strongly request that you register online before the cut-off date. Registration will only be permitted at the door in special circumstances. Online Registration closes on May 17, 2012 to ensure we have sufficient amounts of food and adhere to fire codes. If you register at the door, food will not be guaranteed.

What is the conference age range?
Conference attendees are “mid-singles” who are generally between the ages of 27 and 42.

Who comes to the conference?
Attendees have been known to attend from all over the world. At any given point in time, there will be 700 – 1200 participants. This year we hope to have the largest and most geographically diverse group ever.

Where will the activities be held?
The Friday night activities will be held at Irvine Lanes just south of John Wayne Airport (SNA). All Saturday morning and church on Sunday will be held at the Huntington Beach Stake Center which is located at 8702 Atlanta Avenue in Huntington Beach. Saturday night will be held at The Great Park in Irvine. Please refer to the schedule link on our website for maps and additional details.

Where do I park?
Try to carpool as much as possible. Parking will be available at the various locations throughout the conference:

Friday night – parking lot of Irvine Lanes and overflow parking across the street at a local synagogue.
Saturday morning and Sunday – church parking lot and on the street surrounding it.
Saturday Afternoon Beach Activities – Park anywhere between Main St. and Beach Blvd along the street you’ll find metered parking or for $15.00 you can park in the State Parks parking lot at the intersection of Beach blvd and PCH.

Who puts on the conference?
The Huntington Beach Mid-Singles Conference is organized and staffed almost exclusively by members of the Huntington Beach First Ward with help from members of the stake.

Are you on Facebook?
Find us on Facebook! Yep! Friend us — HB Mid-Singles Conference.

Who should I contact if I have more questions?
If you have questions please email us at hbmidsinglesconference@gmail.com and, yes, we respond so include a real email address. Just like dating, we can’t ask you out if you provide a fake number.

Logistics Answers

What airport should I fly in to?
In order of ‘nearness’ to the conference, the following airports are good choices:

SNA – John Wayne airport in Santa Ana (10 miles)
LGB – Long Beach airport (15 miles) (direct flights on Delta and Jet Blue)
LAX – Los Angeles airport (40 miles)

Where should I stay?
There are many hotels at various price ranges in and around Huntington Beach. Some of the more modestly priced options are:
Days Inn, Huntington Beach or Fountain Valley – www.daysinn.com
Comfort Suites, Costa Mesa or Huntington Beach – www.choicehotels.com
Howard Johnson, Huntington Beach – www.hojo.com
Hotel Huntington Beach, www.hotelhb.com

Can I get free housing with local mid-singles?
If you have a friend who’s willing to let you sleep on the couch, then yes. There is no program to host attendees. However you can sometimes find groups on LDSLinkup.com or Facebook who are looking for other out-of-towners to share a hotel room or vacation homes for the weekend.

What is the weather in Huntington Beach like?
Well, it’s best to check the forecast a few days before you come. But generally in May, the days are sunny and in the high 70s. Nights can be chilly, so bring something warm. Also, the beach can be breezy, so plan appropriately.

What should I wear?
For Friday and Saturday activities, please dress in church-standard, casual attire. What does that mean exactly? Among other things, yes to sleeves, yes to jeans, no to bikinis or miniskirts. Wear modest swimwear and beach attire for beach activities. In all things, remember: Modest is Hottest! Sacrament meeting, fireside and temple sessions require Sunday attire.

Please feel free to increase your donation if you feel so inclined (or inspired as we like to say). Your donation when you register for the conference will provide rural students and teachers with much needed textbooks, reference materials and other essential school and classroom supplies. The supplies will be delivered in person to the kids by LDS single volunteers on expeditions organized by the non-profit organization, Singular Humanitarian experience (SHe).

Imagine if everyone donated $10.00, we can improve the lives of 2,000 kids. Donate $20, and we can double our impact. Please give generously this year as we strive to Be Here Now and make a lasting impact.
A little more about SHe
SHe provides meaningful opportunities for singles to serve together around the world in sustainable humanitarian development projects in health, education and economic development initiatives. Over 220 SHe volunteers (primarily, but not exclusively, LDS singles in their 20s and 30s from the United States and around the world) have served in remote areas of Guatemala, Bolivia and Nepal. SHe will soon open registration for expeditions to Guatemala (July 16-24) and Kenya (September 3-11).
